For Luis Lopez, the promise of a college education seemed too good to be true.
On May 25, Luis and his mentor, Dale Wheeler, stood together as he received his four-year Florida Prepaid scholarship from The Education Foundation – Osceola County and Take Stock In Children. Luis, along with 15 other students, had fulfilled the terms of the contract he and his parents had signed when he was admitted to the Take Stock In Children program as a sixth-grader. Wheeler has been Luis’ mentor for the past four years.
“We talk about everything under the sun, and I believe we have learned a lot from each other. Luis will make it because of his two best traits – determination and commitment – and because of the opportunity he was given by The Education Foundation and Take Stock In Children,” Wheeler said.
At the same ceremony, 23 seventh-graders were admitted into the Take Stock In Children program. The students signed contracts pledging to remain in school, maintain at least a C average, refrain from using drugs or alcohol and meet with an adult mentor every week until they graduate. Each student will then be awarded a 2 + 2 Florida Prepaid Scholarship.
