Did you know that students who do not read over the summer lag behind when the new school year arrives?
There are reading lists recommended by the Osceola County School District for students K-12 available now. Grades K-2 has a total of 29 books to choose from, including “Princess Baby,” by Karen Katz, “The Sandman,” by Ralph Fletcher and “Who Ate All The Cookie Dough?” by Karen Beaumont.
Third- and fourth-graders can choose from “Stuck in The Mud,” by Jane Clarke, “Florida Panthers,” by William Caper, “Car Science,” by Richard Hammond and many other great books. Your fifth- and sixth-grader can choose from 30 books with some well-known authors, including Lois Lowry and Emily Dickinson just to name a few. Middle schoolers choose from a combined list of 15 books under the Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award Program.
High school students can take advantage of two programs; the AP Summer Reading List and the Florida Teens Read Program. In order to meet the requirements of the AP List, students must choose three books and be able to discuss, summarize, annotate and identify elements of literature in each book when returning in the fall. For the Florida Teens Read Program, there are 15 books to decide upon and range from Science Fiction to storylines dealing with the pressures of high school; something many high school students are sure to relate to. Take the time out to review the complete reading
list on the website www.
