The Association of Poinciana Villages (APV) will hold an Independence Day celebration beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, in front of the Veterans Memorial, 401 Walnut St.
This is the seventh year of recognizing Poinciana’s Veterans. As part of the celebration, a veteran from each war is represented and recognized to add to this year’s commemoration. A special tribute will be given for those who served in the Korean War.
Fitting to this column, the Korean War began June 25, 1950. On this 60th anniversary, Poinciana’s Independence Day will be honoring what is called “the Forgotten War.” The start of this war marked the beginning of the “Cold War.” It was the first conflict to include United Nations troops and more than 54,000 Americans paid the ultimate sacrifice in this war. There were 131 who received the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Korean War is referred to as “the forgotten war” since the duration was not as long as World War I, World War II or the Vietnam War, although the Korean War had many countries involved in its short three-year time.
Plan on being at the Poinciana Veterans Memorial  Friday. It’s the perfect opportunity to render a well-deserved tribute to all our veterans. This event will have both the Poinciana Veterans Club as well as the Solivita Veterans Club in attendance. Hot dogs and refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

Park Place Behavioral Health care’s new satellite office in Poinciana celebrated its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony July 17. Brandon Arrington, vice president of Osceola County Board of County Commissioners and district 3 representative, initiated this ribbon cutting.
“Park Place provides a much-needed service for our community in these tough times; transportation is challenging for some and this satellite office will allow those in need a more convenient option. You are an important part of our community,” Arrington said.
The Poinciana clinic is at 2940 Pleasant Hill Road and will offer all routine out-patient services including physician visits, counseling and individual therapy programs, group therapy sessions and psycho-social rehab day treatment programs.
