The Osceola County Council on Aging’s Volunteer Center is working with Osceola County Emergency Management to operate the Volunteer Reception Center in preparation for manmade or natural disasters that strike Osceola County.
Training for community residents registered for the Volunteer Reception Center is scheduled for Wednesday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Osceola Council on Aging’s Barney E. Veal Center, 700 Generation Point, Kissimmee.
The purpose of the Volunteer Reception Center is to coordinate the efforts of community volunteers as they respond to a local emergency. Reception Center volunteers will be assigned to stations to coordinate the efforts of community volunteers following a disaster. Trained volunteers managing the Volunteer Reception Center will interview, coordinate and place community volunteers as needed. Volunteer Reception Center tasks also include greeting, registering, interviewing, printing identification badges and coordinating residents volunteering to assist in the aftermath of a disaster. Volunteers will be entering data, answering phones, acting as couriers and providing security.
“The center is a critically important mechanism to have in place to provide for a safe and organized way for the community to respond to disasters,” stated Connie Bellanceau, Volunteer Center Director for the Osceola Council on Aging’s Volunteer Center, in a press release. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted a busy tropical storm season in 2010.
There is still time to volunteer for the training. For those who have not yet registered, contact the Volunteer Center by June 21. Bi-lingual skills are desirable.
