A registered felon, wanted for burglary, was handed more charges after he ran from deputies trying to arrest him and hit the police dog who caught up with him in the face as he tried to escape across West U.S. Highway 192 Sunday morning.

At around 11:05 a.m., deputies approached Shelton Roberts, 21, of Kissimmee, in the parking lot of Central Motel at 4698 W. U.S. Highway 192. Roberts tried to run toward the front of the motel, but was apprehended by a K-9 unit dog. He grabbed the dog by the face and tried to cross the highway. The dog again caught up with Roberts, who punched the dog in the face.

Roberts kept yelling, “I have a gun. Shoot me, shoot me,” as deputies tried to restrain him, using a Taser and chemical spray to subdue him.

He was taken to the Florida Hospital Celebration Health and medically cleared before being booked into the Osceola County Jail.

He is charged with four counts of battery and one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a police dog, resisting without violence and two counts of resisting with violence.

The arrest warrant against Roberts for burglary and petit theft charges, for which he was being arrested Sunday, was filed earlier this month, according to court records. Roberts had been released from jail on bail for resisting arrest charges filed last May. Bond for that was revoked this week, given the new charges.
