Hoagland Boulevard gets $7.9 million
State Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, has announced that $7.9 million in transportation improvements will soon be made to Hoagland Boulevard.
The much-needed work, he said, is an essential economic development project that will assist one of Osceola County’s most important economic engines — the Kissimmee Gateway Airport.
This is a big win for our local economy,” Horner said. “The Hoagland Boulevard expansion is long overdue and will help our airport expand its services, attract employers and become a more effective hub for commercial activities.”
The funds will allow work to begin on Hoagland Boulevard from Fifth Street to U.S. Highway 192 this year, with the county bidding for the project possibly in August, Horner said. The new timeline could bring the completion of the project two to three years sooner than anticipated.
Lynx rides free on Thursday
This Thursday, the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (Lynx) will offer free rides on all fixed-route and PickUpLine (PUL) services during a national ride public transit day. Passengers just need to show up at a stop and board a bus or call ahead for the PUL to see the benefits.
This national effort is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, protect the environment, reduce dependence on foreign oil and improve quality of life.
Passengers looking for trip assistance may call Lynx at 407-841-LYNX (5969) or visit www.golynx.com to use the online Trip Planner.
New candidate in seat 2 Kissimmee race
James W. Fisher has entered the race for Kissimmee City Commission seat 2.
Other candidates include John Cortes, Wanda Rentas, Jeanne Van Meter and Carlos Irizarry.
Qualifying for the election begins Monday and ends Friday. The city election coincides with the state primary on Aug. 24, followed by a run-off election Nov. 2 if needed.
Seat 2 is currently vacant following Commissioner Irizarry’s suspension by Gov. Charlie Crist the day after the former commissioner’s arrest for aggravated assault. Being suspended did not disallow Irizarry from running in the election.
The Kissimmee City Commission on June 1 decided not to appoint a replacement for Irizarry to serve out his term.
VendorLink active
The Osceola County School District has launched a new in-house, online vendor registration and solicitation notification system called VendorLink, which allows vendors to view and download solicitations at no cost 24-hours a day, seven days a week, from any computer with Internet access.
Vendors must register to access current solicitations on VendorLink, as solicitations are matched with vendors categorized by the specific commodity or service offered.
Registered vendors also will be notified of upcoming opportunities via e-mail. Alternatively, vendors may also request bid documents from the district purchasing department.
Vendors may register for the free service by visiting https:// vendorlink.osceola.org/vendor/
common/login.aspx. Individuals also can call the purchasing department at 407-870-4630 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for assistance with completing this online process.
Three in
St. Cloud race
Only three candidates so far have filed to run in the St. Cloud municipal election, with qualifying week beginning Monday.
Among the candidates in the nonpartisan, at large election are: Jay S. Polachek, seat 1 (mayor); Thomas Griffin, seat 2; and Russell Holmes, seat 3.
Polachek and Griffin are currently on the council, with Polachek in the seat 3 slot, and Griffin in seat 2. Holmes ran in 2009 for mayor but lost.
