The Osceola County School District’s Community Relations Department has been awarded four first-place state awards from the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association in recognition of excellence in communications that strengthen public support for schools throughout Florida.
The department took home top honors in the state with 2010 Sunshine Medallion Awards in the following categories for medium-size school districts:
Best Special Event:
Education in the Park
Every year, the district hosts with business sponsorships the largest youth-oriented event in Osceola County, Education in the Park at the Kissimmee South Lakefront Park. This family-fun day, designed to celebrate kids and education, attracts more than 20,000 community residents and showcases interactive displays by all district public schools, as well as private and charter schools, numerous districtwide programs, and community youth organizations. Parents, students, and community residents are encouraged to see first-hand the innovative programs and offerings available to students in Osceola County. This free community event features more than 100 interactive booths, entertainment by Radio Disney AM 990, Kissimmee Utility Authority Kids’ Zone, non-stop student entertainment, and more.
Best Themed Promotion: “Meet My Favorite Teacher” campaign
At the end of each school year, the district invites students to log on to the district’s website to tell in 50 words or less what makes their favorite teacher so special. Nearly 1,000 entries are usually received and a panel of judges select 10 student and teacher winners. The winning students are each presented with a $100 savings bond, sponsored by the Education Foundation-Osceola County. Each favorite teacher receives a $100 gift card for needed classroom supplies. Winning students and their teachers are then showcased throughout the school year as testaments representing educators in Osceola County.
Best Recognition Program: Superintendent’s
High-Five Employee
Recognition Program
The Superintendent’s High Five Employee Recognition Program centers around the district’s five strategic goals of student achievement, employee professional development, safe and caring environments, efficiency and fiscal responsibility and technology to increase communications and productivity. Anyone who works for the district can nominate a fellow employee for the High Five program. Two High Five winners are selected by a committee of employees on a monthly basis from all nominations submitted.
Superintendent Michael Grego makes surprise visits to each winner’s school/worksite bringing tokens of appreciation, such as gift cards donated by local community businesses. Winners are invited to an upcoming School Board meeting where Grego and the School Board recognize them for their specific contributions to the district’s goals and present them with a High-Five trophy (sponsored by Kissimmee Utility Authority) and a $50 Outback Steakhouse gift certificate from the Education Foundation-Osceola County.
Best Poster/Calendar: Osceola School District’s 2009-10 Calendar
and Parent Guide
The purpose of this annual publication is to provide all parents with not just a school-year calendar, but also with important district information as well. As such, a variety of information is included, such as report card dates, progress report dates, nine-week and semester milestones, volunteer information, school/district programs, choice offerings, school registration and attendance information, school uniforms, pre-kindergarten, student testing information and more. Students in the district take a calendar home to their parents in their “first-day-of-school” packet.
Representatives from the district’s Community Relations Department will be on hand to accept the awards at a luncheon in July as part of the Florida Association of School Administrators conference at the Buena Vista Palace in Orlando.
