If you are a teen between the ages of 16 and 19, consider doing something different this summer: Be a volunteer teen docent at the Pioneer Village.
The Osceola County Historical Society is looking to recruit teens interested in history to volunteer one day a week of service as docents for its museum village in Kissimmee.
As docents, volunteers greet and welcome visitors to the village, offer information about the exhibits, give tours of the authentic late-1800s village and on certain days, serve as youth leaders to campers of the organization’s Pioneer For A Day program. The volunteers are provided structured training and leadership guidance.
A summer as a volunteer teen docent at the historical society provides an experience of personal development and growth, including honing communication and workplace skills and taking initiative toward responsible decision-making and leadership – all essentials applicable to future educational and career endeavors, according to a society press release.
Accrued volunteer hours can be applied toward community service credits under certain educational programs (check with your school guidance department) or applied to job résumé experience
Visitors to the Pioneer Village come from various states and countries and society docents have shared conversations with these travelers, often learning many new things in the process. And there is the rewarding experience of working with other OCHS volunteers, who are an interesting, friendly and a supportive team of dedicated people, the press release stated.
The Osceola County Historical Society and its Pioneer Village are at 750 N. Bass Road, Kissimmee.
