Summer break is almost here. Children from both Osceola and Polk counties have a variety of activities and camps to choose from and a chance to try something new this summer.

There will be a parent orientation meeting for the Poinciana Family YMCA, 397 Marigold Ave., summer camp today at 7 p.m. At this meeting you can receive a 10 percent discount for your child’s second week at camp. Decorate a camp bag with your child and receive your child’s camp T-shirt. Important camp information and give-a-ways will be distributed.
The day camp at the Poinciana Family YMCA is for children ages 5 through 12. The 10-week camp begins June 14. The camp day begins at 7 a.m. and ends at 6:30 p.m. Campers are energized and engaged through games, arts and crafts, sports, swimming and special events. The weekly cost is $86 per week/$25 per day.
YMCA summer basketball for youths ages 6 to 14 runs from June 19 to Aug. 21. The registration deadline is June 9, with practices beginning June 19 and games beginning June 26. Games are held Saturday mornings, with one practice during the week. Cost is $30 for YMCA members, $58 non-members.
Even kids ages 3 to 5 have a summer basketball camp of their own. Itty Bitty is the name of the league, with the season running from July 5 to Aug. 9. The league meets at the YMCA on Mondays at 6 p.m. Cost is $24 for YMCA members, $48 non-members. For more information, call the Poinciana Family YMCA, 863-496-1814.
Studio 5-6-7-8, 3364 Southport Road, will host a summer day camp for ages 5 to 15. Daily classes offered include ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, cheer, tumbling, baton twirling, ribbons, musical theatre, puppets, boot camp, musical notation, choreography and arts and crafts.
The camp day runs from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. A $50 registration fee is required. Full-time camp runs five days a week at $85 a week. Part-time camp is two to four days a week at a cost of $20 a day. One-day camp is $25 for the day. For more information, call 407-435-8858.

Osceola County Fire Rescue Chief Rich Collins and members of his staff will hold a community meeting Friday at 6 p.m., at Poinciana Fire Station No. 65,1201 Cypress Parkway. The purpose of this meeting is to explain the Osceola County Fire Rescue’s budget level of services proposed fire assessment fees for 2010-11. Residents are invited to attend. At the conclusion of the meeting, tours of the fire station will be available.
The Poinciana Veterans Club will hold a special Memorial Day Ceremony Monday, May 31. The ceremony will be in front of the Association of Poinciana Villages Administration Veterans Memorial, 401 Walnut St. The Poinciana Veterans Club will lay a wreath at the monument followed by a flag-folding ceremony by the Sea Cadets. The Sea Cadets will also hold a retirement of the flag ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend. In addition, if anyone has an American flag that is tattered or faded and they wish to retire it properly, they may bring it with them.

The Friends of the Poinciana Hospital will hold a hospital update Tuesday, June 1, at 6 p.m. at the Poinciana Community Center, 395 Marigold Ave. The speaker for the evening will be Dan Miller, president, Hospital Corporation of America, West Florida Division (parent company of Osceola Regional Medical Center).
