American Legion Post 80 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 3227 members are coordinating with city of St. Cloud Parks and Recreation staff for the Memorial Day ceremony set for Monday at 10 a.m. at Mt. Peace Cemetery.
Memorial Day is a sacred day for war veterans and the purpose of the annual service is to remind citizens of the deaths of those who sacrificed their lives during wartime. By honoring the nation’s war dead, citizens preserve their memory, service and sacrifice.
The public is invited to the ceremony, which will feature retired Army Lt. Col. Larry Mortland as the keynote speaker. American Legion Auxiliary representatives will also be present distributing the poppy, a bright-red memorial flower that is the symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war. The poppy also represents the hope that no sacrifice of lives in war is in vain. This flower was adopted as a symbol of remembrance because it was so widespread on the sites of the battlefields of Europe after World War I.
“Memorial Day is also Poppy Day in St. Cloud,” Mayor Donna Hart said. “Citizens are urged to participate in this Memorial Day commemoration to demonstrate their faith in and appreciation of those men and women who died and continue to die in the cause of liberty and justice. The men and women who have served and died for our country deserve to be remembered.”
Mt. Peace Cemetery is the final resting place for many veterans. Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies are traditionally held at Mt. Peace Cemetery annually.
Located at 755 E. 10th St., the cemetery was opened in 1909 and consists of an 18-acre wooded area.
