At the ripe old age of 8, Tommy Boyer will do something Sunday that millions of adult baseball fans would love to try: play on the same field as the major leaguers.
Boyer will compete in the Aquafina Pitch, Hit & Run state finals at Tropicana Field following the Tampa Bay Rays 1:30 p.m. game against the Chicago White Sox.
Boyer advanced to the state finals by winning the Osceola County competition at Neptune Middle School, and the sectionals at Orlando’s Barnett Park.
Tommy’s father, Don Boyer, said his son’s combined score of 671 in the sectionals ranked among the top 3 in the state for the age 7-8 division, earning Tommy a trip to St. Petersburg Sunday.
If Tommy Boyer is nervous about stepping on a big stage, he hides it well. In fact, he is confident.
“I’m going to win it,” he said.
Don Boyer said the Pitch, Hit & Run competition consists of throwing six balls at a target from 46 feet; hitting three balls off a tee; and running 160 feet for time.
“He hit the target with five of the six throws,” Don Boyer said. “He thought he should have hit it with all six.”
Tommy Boyer plays for the Osceola Outlaws travel ball team and Osceola Youth Baseball.
“The reason that Tommy is doing so well with these skills is because of the coaching he gets from his travel ball coaches,” his father said.
Tommy Boyer said this isn’t his first visit to Tropicana Field.
“I’ve probably been there three times,” he said.
The contestants will be introduced prior to Sunday’s game.
Winners will be invited to the national competition at the Major League All-Star Game in July at Anaheim, Calif.
