The Osceola County Historical Society is gearing-up for the third summer of its unique day camp program, Pioneer For A Day, in which campers between 8 and 12 years old learn about pioneering life in the 1800s and aspects of Florida’s history while experiencing the authentic settings of the society’s 4-acre Pioneer Village and 8-acre Nature Preserve.
Three “themed” daylong sessions are offered: June 24 – Homesteading; July 22 – Cracker Culture; and Aug. 12 – Florida’s Nature. Parents may register their children for one, two or all three sessions.
At the camp, the children are given hands-on experiences in pioneer gardening, house and farm chores, heritage crafts and old-time games. They learn about Florida cattlemen skills and “cracker” culture, and about Florida’s ecology and its importance to the Native Americans, early pioneers and to all Floridians today.
From their experiences at the Pioneer For A Day camp, the children come away with rudimentary skills and information that foster self-esteem and have practical applications for daily life. Each session is kept to a small enrollment to afford each child a full quality experience.
Registration is $30 per session ($15 per each additional child of a household), and includes lunch and snacks. The Osceola County Historical Society and its Pioneer Village are at 750 N. Bass Road (just off U.S. Highway 192) in Kissimmee.
