St. Cloud boy crushes competition at track meet PDF Print E-mail

At the campus of Lake Brantley High School, teams of students from as far away as Miami came to compete at the 18th Annual Spring Track Classic.
Among the competitors was a fifth-grader from St Cloud, Beckham Sturgill, who registered as “unattached,” meaning he didn’t arrive with a team. Instead, he came with his mom, his biggest fan.  
When his first event was called to step onto the field, Sturgill, a student at Harmony Community School in St. Cloud, made his way out of the crowd, grabbed his tape measure and focused on his first event at hand, the long jump. Although his jump did not meet his personal best of 15-feet, 6-inches, he still won the overall event at 14-feet, 10-inches.
Four hours later, in the heat of the day, Sturgill got the call he’d been waiting for, the boys 800-meter race. “The 800 is my favorite event,” Sturgill said. “It’s not a sprint and it’s not long distance. Other kids hate this run, but I love it.”
The 800-meter (half-mile) event record was recorded at 2:27 in 2001, but after Sturgill finished, he’d sliced the record down to a time of 2:23.23. “I felt like I could have run faster, but I didn’t have anyone running beside me
