The city of Kissimmee Public Works and Engineering Department received $20,000 of matching grants from the United States Forest Service through its Urban and Community Forestry Program.
According to a press release, the city has begun a tree inventory of its public rights-of-way to address and promote the needs of the city’s urban forest. Crews will be working in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., until Friday, May 21.
One of the goals of the project is to develop a stronger partnership between the city and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Through this project, a database will be created that will document tree location, species, size and condition by using special equipment.  The city will use the information for regular maintenance and after storms.
The city hired Davey Resource Group, a division of The Davey Tree Expert Company, to perform the inventory. Davey staff will collect data on more than 7,600 trees located on public property along city streets. Davey’s urban foresters are Certified Arborists through the International Society of Arboriculture and will be approaching and assessing city-owned trees throughout Kissimmee.
All vehicles will be marked with a Davey Tree sign and employees will have proper identification.
