What began as a church member’s request for help cleaning up graffiti has now become a community focus.

Manny Soro, member of First Baptist Church Poinciana, asked members of the youth group to help with some of his neighborhood’s eyesores. As the issue was put for discussion with church staff, the idea for a community-wide clean-up project — Project Poinciana — was born.
The goal of Project Poinciana is to improve the over-all look of the community by reducing litter and graffiti. Project Poinciana hopes to encourage people to take pride in their homes and yards. With this project, Poinciana will increase its beauty and become even more family friendly.
Project Poinciana can only be successful with the whole community’s involvement. Groups can adopt a highway or waterway. All civic groups are encouraged to participate, as well as churches, scout groups and school programs.
Pastor Jim Rogers volunteered First Baptist Church of Poinciana to handle some organization of clean-up days and certain projects. The group also developed a slogan, “Project Poinciana — working together to make our community beautiful.”

Mother’s Day is May 9. Unfortunately, not every mother has their family living close to them and some elderly mothers find themselves alone on their special day.
The Osceola Council on Aging is once again highlighting mothers by holding their annual Meals for Mom event. During this event, sponsored mothers receive a special meal and a flower, courtesy of Kissimmee Florist on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9. Volunteers will be delivering the meals in the morning between 10 a.m. and noon.
Residents may sponsor one of the regular Meals on Wheels clients or someone they know or even a complete stranger who has been identified through the council’s program. Sponsors can mail in $10 for each person they would like to sponsor. If you are interested in sponsoring a mom or volunteering to deliver, call the Council on Aging, 407-846-8532.
