Lynx to offer free rides for seniors
On May 5 and 6, the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority, or Lynx, will provide free rides to any person 65 or older on any fixed route or PickUpLine service.
This offer is in conjunction with the authority’s partnership for the upcoming 14th Annual Senior Expo and Health Fare at the Central Florida Fairgrounds.
Democrat joins House race
Jay B. Snyder, of St. Cloud, on April 26 filed with the State Division of Elections to run as a Democrat in the district 79 Florida House race.
Snyder is the only Democrat in the race so far. Republicans include incumbent Mike Horner, of Kissimmee, who is seeking his second term, and Thomas E. Chalifoux Jr., also of Kissimmee. Chalifoux ran in 2008 for the House seat but was bounced from the ballot on an election technicality relating to the state’s resign-to-run law.
Law Enforcement Memorial May 6
The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will host this year’s Law Enforcement Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Courthouse Square in Kissimmee.
Community leaders, law enforcement officers, survivors of officers killed in the line of duty and residents annually participate in a ceremony that recognizes the sacrifices made by law enforcement and honors those who died while serving.
As part of the ceremony, special tribute is being paid to 10 law enforcement officers from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Kissimmee Police Department, St. Cloud Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol who either died in the line of duty or who died while working in law enforcement.
Horse owner workshop
Kissimmee Valley Feed and Ranch Supply at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, will host a free workshop that will concentrate on equine first aid.
“This workshop is a must for new and long-time horse owners,” Stan Touchstone, owner of Kissimmee Valley Feed, said. “Our goal is to provide people with information they need in order to deal with equine medical emergencies.”
Marsha Pidherney, a veterinarian, will provide the instruction at the workshop.
Pidherney will cover the following topics: knowing what is normal with your horse; what items you should have in your first aid kit; how to care for lacerations and puncture wounds; the signs and treatment for colic; and how to recognize and treat choke.

Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served starting at 6 p.m. Door prize drawings will be at the conclusion of the workshop.
Bluegrass jams at Pioneer Village
On the first Sunday of every month, the sounds of live bluegrass music can be heard on the grounds of the Osceola County Historical Society Pioneer Village when area musicians take part in Bluegrass Jam Sessions.
The sessions, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., are free, and spectators are welcome (just bring your own chairs). Only acoustic bluegrass music is performed and alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the grounds. The Pioneer Village is at 750 N. Bass Road (just off U.S. Highway 192), Kissimmee.
While the jam sessions are free, there is a separate admission for visitors wishing to view the buildings and exhibits of the Pioneer Village.

Pioneer descendant workshop June 5
The Osceola County Historical Society from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 5, will hold a workshop on the Florida pioneer descendant application process
Ann Bergelt and Anza Bast, members of the Florida Pioneer Committee, will conduct the workshop for those interested in qualifying to receive a certificate from the Florida State Genealogical Society.
In order to establish a Florida pioneer descendant, lineage must be proven from the living descendant to either an ancestor who lived in the state prior to 1845 or in an individual county before it was established (years vary).
Information regarding forms, documents and the application process will be available for those who wish to pursue these awards. A workbook can be downloaded from the Florida Pioneer section of the website for Florida State Genealogical Society at www.flsgs.org or can be purchased for $5 at the June 5 workshop.
Advance registration is required to participate in the workshop, which also will be an opportunity for anyone to learn more about the early years in Florida or Osceola County.
