District 4 race has two new candidates
The Osceola County district 4 commission race grew by two Democrats this week. Bob Healy Jr., of Kissimmee, and Earl G. Solano, of St. Cloud, have filed with the Supervisor of Elections office.
The nine previously announced candidates include Democrats Donna Hart and Donald Miers, Republicans Frank Attkisson, Lester Centurion, Melani Jane Davis, Paul Owen, Donald A. Shroyer, Melvin C. Welch and no-party-affiliation candidate Joseph L. Cólon. Republican Glenn Sangiovanni had filed to run but withdrew.
The primary election will be Aug. 24. The general election will be Nov. 2.
Colon will not have to run in the primary and will go directly into the general election.
School Board to consider Highlands contract Tuesday
The Osceola County School Board at its workshop Tuesday is scheduled to discuss selecting a construction management firm to oversee the $14.5 million Highlands Elementary School replacement project.
The School Board on March 9 decided to seek new proposals following a protest over how the district applied its local vendor policy. That protest came from one of the companies that had submitted a proposal. That protest also led to the School District reworking its vendor policy as it applies to construction management firms and joint ventures.
In the initial round of proposals, the joint venture of W.G. Mills/Ranger Building Services, which lists Kissimmee as its address due to Ranger Building Services being Kissimmee-based, was ranked first. However, the selection committee revisited the rankings applying the vendor policy differently, putting Turner Construction, a nationwide company with Florida offices, at the top. That re-ranking led to the protest.
According to district documents, Turner Construction is no longer among the four top-ranked firms for the project. Among the top ranked firms are: Ajax Building Corp., of Midway, with a Clermont office; Barton Malow Company, a national firm with an Orlando office; Clancy & Theys Construction Company, a national firm with an Orlando office; and W.G. Mills/Ranger Building Services (W.G. Mills is based in Sarasota).
School District to offer vendor training
The Osceola County School District’s Purchasing Department will host a training session on how to do business with the district from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, in the Media and Instructional Technology Training Room #1, 817 Bill Beck Blvd. (Building 2000), Kissimmee.
The training session will be an informative overview of the registration and solicitation process. Staff members will be available after the presentation for assistance with the registration process and to answer questions about specific commodities and services that the School District procures.
Call the Purchasing Department at 407-870-4630 for additional information and to reserve a spot for the event.
