The St. Cloud Police Department held a celebration April 14 at its Communications Center in honor of National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (April 11-17) and in recognition of the city of St. Cloud and neighboring law enforcement organizations’ communications operators.
Twenty-five dedicated communications operators serve St. Cloud’s 32,630 residents by responding to callers requesting service from SCPD and St. Cloud Fire Rescue. They also are responsible for the dispatch of all units to assist residents.
“Our communications operators are very special people,” Chief of Police Pete Gauntlett said. “This is a high-stress position that requires a person who has good stress-management skills and can make accurate and timely decisions. I am proud to see the dedication and strong sense of commitment our communications operators have in this most-critical task. They are the lifeline of St. Cloud residents and our police officers.”
And St. Cloud’s communications operators are all cross-trained and Emergency Medical Dispatcher-certified (EMD-certified); an important fact for St. Cloud residents because this helps ensure timely, quality assistance during emergencies within the community.
Annually, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. St. Cloud’s communications operators are recognized for their daily efforts.
