While the world celebrates Earth Day today, Osceola  County School District's faculty, staff, and students will be participating as well, each one with a strong sense of satisfaction at having done his or her part to control energy use.
The Osceola School District has an active energy conservation program that has already achieved more than $1 million in savings through a 15.3 percent reduction in energy use over the last six months. Since the district began the program, energy consumption has been reduced by 8 million kWh of electricity. That reduction translates into the equivalent of 4,850 tons of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere, or 870 passenger cars removed from the road, or 124,050 trees planted.
For Earth Day, the district plans to continue its savings, and invites the public to join in with energy conservation efforts. Energy Education Specialists Jeff Peters and Brian Richard said there are a number of resources available on the Internet that can help individuals learn how to save energy in their own homes.  One being GreenQuest at mygreenquest.com/osceolak12fl, a free personal energy information website that makes it easy for anyone to track and evaluate their property’s energy use, cost and green-house gas emissions.
