Relay For Life Poinciana will be Friday through Saturday. This overnight celebration and remembrance of lives touched by cancer will be at Liberty High School.
The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is an overnight event that gives everyone a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember the loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times. Because cancer never sleeps, relays are an overnight event and are 18 hours long.
There are three traditions each relay incorporates into the event. There will be a Survivor’s Lap, where cancer survivors take to the track in a walk celebrating their survival. A Luminaria Ceremony is another tradition, with a candlelight ceremony in remembrance of lives lost to the disease.
The third tradition is fundraising. The 2010 theme for Relay For Life Poinciana is “Relaying Around the World.” The midway of booths around the track at Liberty High will showcase several foreign countries, as well as the United States. Fundraising will be achieved through the purchase of food, crafts and more. You can make a difference by making a donation at the event.
So far, more than $32,000 has been raised with 27 teams and more than 320 participants. Relay For Life starts at 6 p.m. If you are not on a team, you can still go by the school and participate by supporting the fundraising efforts.

The 2010 Poinciana Expo will be Saturday, June 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Poinciana Community Center Complex. Organized by the Poinciana Area Council, booth space is available inside the community center, YMCA or outside in the complex area. This is a great way to promote your business as many potential customers and clients will be browsing. For the first time ever, commercially made wares may be sold. Sponsored by Avatar Properties, this is a terrific opportunity to introduce new products or services.
The price for booth space varies: Community center booths are $100 for profit. Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce members pay $75; non-profit groups pay $50. Space at the Poinciana Family YMCA is $90 for profit; chamber members pay $65; and nonprofits pay $40. Outside price rates are the same as YMCA pricing. Food vendors need to call for pricing.
The Poinciana Community Center is at 395 Marigold Ave. To make a reservation or for more information, call Betty Dobbie, 407-343-1560.
