Two district champions lead Poinciana to the 2A Region 2 track meet today at Lake Highland Prep.

Triple jumper Kenina Bonner (33-9.5) and 800-meters runner Zach Molid (2:08.45) were champions at the 2A District 8 meet at Frostproof last week.

Athletes from Liberty, Osceola and Gateway compete at the 4A-4 district meet today at 1 p.m. at Winter Park’s Showalter Field. The 3A-6 district meet, with Harmony, Celebration and St. Cloud was held Wednesday at Celebration.

Poinciana, like all Class A and Class 2A schools, begins district competition one week earlier than the Class 3A-4A schools.

Bonner also qualified for today’s regional in the 100 meters (3rd, 12.68) and 200 meters (27.0) sprints.

She also qualified as a member of Poinciana’s 4 x 100 relay (3rd, 51.05) with Nikkita Akkerman, Nephtali Duronville and Kadijah Barnett.

Other qualifiers for the Eagles are Barnett (2nd, 4-10) in the high jump; Solmaris Melo (2nd, 80-5) in the discus; Akkerman (3rd, 14-5.5) and Brown (14-4.5) in the long jump and the 4 x 800 relay (4th, 12:31.16).

Poinciana’s (93.5) girls were third behind Lakeland McKeel (176) and Lake Wales (108); the boys (77) were fifth. Frostproof (123.5) won the boys championship.

“Kenina had a great meet. I was really pleased with her triple jump, which was a personal best,” Eagle Coach Bryan McLoughlin said. “She is a great example to the other girls, because she has lots of track experience from New York. She has run on a 4 x 100 team that ran 47 seconds. I expect Kenina, Nikkita, Nephtali and Kadijah to run faster at the regional.”

The Class 2A State meet is May 1 at Showalter Field.

The Class 3A and 4A meets follow one week later.
