Sometimes it may seem like the only teens to receive attention are the “bad” ones, teens who may be known for only their poor behavior and insolent attitude.
It’s important to notice and recognize the “good” ones, the hard-working students who achieve and are focused on achieving their goals. The community of Poinciana is fortunate to have several outstanding young people who are on their way. Two such promising rising stars are the 2010 recipients of the Poinciana Area Council Scholarships.
Every year, the Poinciana Area Council awards two $1,000 scholarships to 12th-grade students who reside in ZIP codes 34758 or 34759. Even if the student is out-of-zoned to attend a different school, the students may apply if they have a minimum 2.5 GPA and submit a 500-word essay. For the first time, not one, but both recipients attend Haines City High School.
Winner Krystal Blanco has been accepted to the University of Miami. After obtaining her bachelor of science degree, Blanco hopes to go on to Boston University to earn her master’s degree and PhD in biomedical engineering.
Blanco is currently in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program at Haines City High and is a member of the National Honor Society. She has contributed 278 community services hours, volunteering as a camp counselor at the Association of Poinciana Villages’ Parks and Recreation and at Haines City High School.
Winner Stephanie Feliciano has been accepted to attend High Point University in North Carolina this fall. After achieving her goal of a degree in elementary education, she will earn a master’s in elementary education administration degree.
Feliciano has contributed more than 200 hours of community service at Ark of Salvation Church in Haines City ,where she volunteered as a tutor and a children’s ministry teacher. It is clear by Feliciano’s goals that she has been powerfully influenced by great educators and they should be proud.
These are just two examples of what can come out of Poinciana. The next time you hear a negative statement made about “these kids today,” think about the ones who are going so far and make us all proud.

This is the weekend for family fun! The Poinciana Family YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in and around the grounds of the YMCA at 397 Marigold Ave.
The games scheduled are a family basketball game from  11 to 11:30 a.m., four laps around the walking trail from 11:30 a.m. to noon and a family volleyball game wraps up the day, from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Participate or cheer on your favorites.
Participants include the Polk County Library, Polk County Sheriff’s Department, Polk County Fire Department and the Marine Corps. Avatar Properties will provide the hot dogs. This free event also will include a bounce house, relay games and face painting.
This year’s theme is to “Put play in your day.” This is a fun way to incorporate outdoor activities into your lifestyle. The day is dedicated to Poinciana’s youth. Get them active and join in.
