A 21-year-old Kissimmee father was arrested Wednesday for child abuse after he admitted that he had become frustrated that his 3-month-old child would not stop crying and shook him, Kissimmee police detectives reported.

Matthew Coleman, of 2218 Grand Cayman Court, called 911 to say that his son was unresponsive and wasn't breathing at around 12:22 p.m. Wednesday. The Kissimmee Fire Department transported the baby to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he remained unresponsive and doctors determined the child had a possible brain injury. He was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital, and Kissimmee Police Department detectives were called to investigate how the child suffered the severe injuries.

When detectives interviewed Coleman, he admitted his frustration that the child would not stop crying, explaining that he shook his son and threw him onto the bed, detectives said. He then went outside to smoke a cigarette, and when he came back inside, the child wasn't breathing.

The child remains in stable, but critical condition at the hospital, police reported. Coleman was transported to Osceola County Jail, where he was being held on no bond for child abuse and domestic violence.
