Osceola High advanced to the consolation finals of the Kissimmee Klassic softball tournament’s Gold bracket last weekend with victories over Naples Barron Collier and No. 7-ranked Class 6A East Ridge before falling to DeLand Saturday.
Harmony, which lost in nine-innings, 4-3, to Tallahassee Lincoln in the Gold bracket consolation round Friday, stays busy this weekend at state champion Dunnellon’s tournament. The Longhorns were scheduled to meet Eustis Wednesday in a 4A District 6 game that should decide the No. 1 seed at the district tournament in two weeks.
St. Cloud lost to Colonial, 5-2, in the White bracket consolations Friday to end its Klassic stay.
Osceola, 14-8, beat Barron Collier, 5-1, as senior Haley Wright threw a four-hitter and first baseman Carmen Nadal was 4-for-4 with four RBIs.
Nadal drove in Alexa Ballard, who went 2-for-3 and drove in one run, in the second inning and did the same in the third inning to give the Kowgirls a 2-1 lead.
Osceola scored three times in the sixth inning as Dayaara Rivera doubled and pinch runner Jessica Callahan scored on Ballard’s RBI single. Bianca Torres, who walked, and Ballard scored on Nadal’s two-run single later in the inning.
Osceola, which lost to Gold bracket runner-up Cocoa Space Coast, 3-1, in the first round, continued to play well in Saturday morning’s consolation round win over East Ridge, 9-2, as Sasha Mendez scattered 11 hits to earn the victory.
Ballard went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs and Torres doubled in two runs. Callahan, Morgan Crapo and Nicole Osterman all drove in runs for OHS.
Osceola led 1-0 in the consolation final against DeLand when Torres drew a walk and scored on a passed ball before DeLand scored twice in the second inning and three times in the fourth to break it open.
Harmony, 10-5, led Lincoln, 3-2 in the seventh inning after RBIs from pitcher Breann Vanderzyl, Lauren Harris and Payton Dering, who homered. Lincoln tied it in the bottom of the inning with two outs and won in the ninth, again with two outs.
Harmony had a runner at third base in both the eighth and ninth innings.
St. Cloud, 10-6, got RBI hits from Ashley Gomez and Sam Gale against Colonial in the White bracket.
Naples won the Blue bracket championship over Winter Springs, 4-0. Naples pitcher Jaclyn Traina was the bracket MVP after pitching a perfect game and a no-hitter at the Klassic.
Winter Springs upset top-ranked Class 6A Timber Creek, 3-1, in the semifinals.
Sarasota beat Space Coast, 1-0, for the Gold bracket crown and Pembroke Pines topped Tate Cantonment, 8-4, in the White bracket.
Forty-eight teams competed at the Klassic, which has earned a reputation among softball coaches as one of the state’s premier tournaments.
The regular season resumes next week. District tournaments begin April 19. Osceola will host the 5A District 5 tournament, where state runner-up Lake Wales is favored. Harmony will host the 4A-6 tourney.
