Osceola High sprinter Tynia Gaither stepped into the international spotlight and shined at the 39-nation Carifta Games this week at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Grand Cayman.
Gaither, the defending 100 meter Class 4A state champion, ran 23.83 seconds in the age 20-under 200 meters final Monday to earn the silver medal, capping a record-setting weekend for the 17-year-old junior.
St. Croix’s Allison Peter easily won the 200 meters championship in 23.29 seconds.
Gaither set a personal record in the 200 during the semifinals Sunday with a time of 23.78 seconds.
She had never run under 24 seconds before the Carifta Games.
Her OHS coach, Eric Pinellas, said Gaither surpassed all expectations at the games.
“Unbelievable,” is how Pinellas described her performance. “The thing that has been holding her back is that she doesn’t see that kind of competition here. You put her in that setting, against that kind of talent, and now she has somebody pushing her and all that talent that she has comes out.”
Gaither placed sixth at 100 meters in 11.86 seconds Saturday after recording a personal-record 11.70 seconds in the preliminary heat.
Gaither, who holds dual citizenship, ran for the Bahamas. She anchored that country’s 4 x 100 relay (45.5) to a second-place finish Saturday.
“She was pretty tired by the time the 100 final rolled around because she had done the 100 prelim, the 4 x 100 and the 100 final all in a little over an hour,” Pinellas said. “That 11.70 in the prelims knocked a lot out of her.”
Gaither will resume training for the OHS track team and prepare to defend her 100 meters state title next month.
Pinellas said Gaither’s goal is to win gold medals in both the 100 meters and 200 meters races this year.
