The 18th Kissimmee Klassic prep softball tournament gets under way today at the Osceola County Softball Complex, bringing 48 teams that will compete in three 16-team brackets through Saturday.
Included in the field are five of the state’s top 10 teams, according to the Miracle Sports state poll: No. 2 Naples, No. 3 Timber Creek, No. 8 Jacksonville Bolles, No. 9 Winter Springs and No. 10 Miami Gulliver Prep.

Action begins at 1 p.m. today when the teams will play their first-round games.
Games start Friday at 9 a.m. Saturday’s games begin at 9 a.m. The semifinal round Saturday begins at 2:15 p.m., with the finals slated for 6 p.m.
Admission is $9 daily or $25 for a tournament pass.
Tickets for all sessions are available at the gate.
Three champions will be crowned in the Blue, Gold and White brackets.
Host Osceola, 12-6, will play in the Gold bracket
against No. 10 Class 4A Cocoa Space Coast, 13-2, at 8 p.m. today. Harmony, 9-3, meets Jacksonville Mandarin at 4:30 p.m. in the Gold bracket.
St. Cloud, 10-5, plays Sebastian River at 4:30 p.m. today in the White bracket.
The Blue bracket houses the state’s elite teams. Nationally ranked Timber Creek, 14-0, with all-state pitcher Brittany MacFawn, and Winter Springs, 13-3, with sophomore Kiersten Coffman on the mound, will play in the Blue bracket. Timber Creek is ranked No. 1 in Miracle Sports Class 6A state poll; Winter Springs is No. 2.
Naples, 10-1, No. 2 in Class 4A, brings four all-state players for Coach Bob Iamuri.
State powerhouse Jacksonville Bolles. 9-1, No. 2 in Class 3A, will make its first Klassic appearance in the Blue bracket, where all 16 teams reached the regional playoffs last season.
Several ranked teams will square off in the first round of the Blue bracket: Gulliver Prep, 10-1, No. 3 in Class 3A, meets No. 7 Class 5A Tampa Chamberlain, 10-2; No. 2 Class 2A Florida Christian, 11-6, meets No. 5 Class 4A North Fort Myers; Jacksonville Eagles View, 9-3, No. 1 in Class A takes on No. 9 Class 6A Palm Beach Gardens, 13-4; and Fort Myers Riverdale, 12-4, No. 7 in Class 4A plays Bolles.
Osceola Coach George Coffey, who started the Klassic in 1993, said his team is ready to go following a grueling stretch that saw OHS play eight games in 11 days over the past two weeks. Osceola dropped four in a row, including an 8-6 decision at Harmony, last week.
“We needed a break to heal up a little, and to recharge,” Coffey said. “We’ll be ready to go for the Klassic, though. One thing about our team is that we go at 100 percent no matter what the situation.”
With a young lineup, Coffey said the team decided to play in the Gold bracket rather than the Blue bracket this year. Not that the competition there is much easier. Four Gold teams are ranked by Miracle Sports in their respective classes, and several more received mention, including Osceola in the Class 5A poll.
Five Gold bracket teams made the Elite Eight last season, including Harmony. The Lady Longhorns lost to the eventual state champs from Dunnellon in the regional finals. Dunnellon, which is not at the Klassic, is No. 1 in Class 4A and No. 1 in Miracle Sports’ overall top 10.
Harmony, which clinched the Orange Belt Conference championship with its win over Osceola last week, boasts a roster with a blend of youth and experience that has Coach Ralph King excited about its prospects.
“We need to play in the Klassic, against the great competition that you find there, to get ready for the postseason,” King said. “That’s the only way you can get better. That’s why we’re going to play in the Dunnellon tournament over the spring break.”
Harmony will play Eustis April 7 in a makeup game that likely will determine the No. 1 seed at the 4A District 6 tournament.
St. Cloud shrugged off disappointing losses against Harmony and Osceola recently to rebound with victories over Poinciana and Liberty behind pitcher Samantha Gale.
Thirty-three of the 48 teams in the Klassic reached the regionals last season. The Class 4A (Jacqlyn Traina of Naples) and 3A (Sara Buchholz of Gulliver Prep) Players of the Year for 2009 are in the tournament.
