Poinciana By Lisa D’Cato

Everyone loves an excuse to play, and the Poinciana Family YMCA Healthy Kid’s Day gives you that reason to get out and enjoy. With its motto being “Put Play in your Day,” the community is invited to attend this event Saturday, April 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in and around the grounds of the Poinciana Family YMCA, 397 Marigold Ave.

The games scheduled are a family basketball game from11 to 11:30 a.m., four laps around the family walking trail from 11:30 a.m. to noon and a family volleyball game from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Participate or cheer on your favorites.
Participants include Polk County Library, Polk County Sheriff’s Department and the Polk County Fire Department. Avatar Properties will provide the hot dogs. This free event also will feature a bounce house, relay games and face painting.
The day is dedicated to Poinciana’s youth. Get them active and join in.

Yes, it’s April Fool’s Day. It’s also Census 2010 Day and you’d be foolish not to fill yours out and mail it in.
One of the most important things you can do is to be a part of it.
Every household has received a census form to fill out. Census information helps determine how much federal funding comes into communities. This will help Poinciana for things like schools, health programs, senior services and health services. It also helps businesses like restaurants, shop owners and even big box stores when they are considering coming into our area. Before businesses make such a big investment, they need to make sure there are enough people in the area to sustain it.
Your Census information is protected by law. Your information cannot be shared with the IRS, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, ICE and CIA, police, military or welfare agencies.
If for some reason you do not fill out your Census form and mail it back, you may receive a visit from a Census worker. The worker will need to produce an I.D. and will have a confidentiality notice. The worker will not ask for any banking information or credit card information. As with all strangers, talk to people on the doorstep.
Do your part in showing the correct demographics of your community. It’s simple and easy. To not be counted in the 2010 Census would be the ultimate April Fool’s joke.

The Association of Poinciana Villages’ Parks and Recreation Department will hold the community’s annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday at 10 a.m., at Deerwood Park (off Laurel Avenue). Children 10 and under are invited to collect their goodies. Bring a basket or bag to this free event.

The Osceola County School District will be opening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). These Choice programs will be at Discovery Intermediate School and Poinciana High School for the next school year. A Choice program provides opportunities for students outside the traditional attendance boundaries of a school to attend that school and take advantage of the special programs offered. These programs are designed to be rigorous and engaging, with opportunities for job shadowing, hands-on experience and industry certification.
The STEM program schools opening for the 2010-11 school year are Discovery Intermediate Academy of Science and Technology and Poinciana High School-Academy of Engineering and Construction, Academy of Health Professions and Academy of Finance.
Informational meetings for both middle and high school Choice programs will be April 12 and April 19 at Poinciana High School, April 14 at Discovery Intermediate School. The time for all these meetings is 6 p.m.
Choice programs are open to students district wide. For more information, call the district’s Choice office at 407-870-4847.
