Gateway and Osceola, two polo programs enjoying good seasons, face off Tuesday at 7 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) at the Makinson Aquatic Center.
All four teams remain alive for a District 3 playoff spot. The top four teams in the district qualify.
Gateway’s girls carried a 10-2 record into Thursday’s district match against Cypress Creek, winning five of six. The Lady Panthers stopped Colonial, 5-2, Tuesday as Melissa Morgan scored three times, and Amber Paoloemilio and Jodi Hennen each scored one. Sam Hoin made eight saves. In a 7-2 win over Timber Creek last week, Paoloemilio scored six goals and Hoin made 18 saves.
Paoloemilio has scored six goals in four of the team’s past six matches.
The boys team, 7-5, also is on a roll, winning five of six. The highlight of the season came during a 6-5 shootout win over Lake Nona. The game ended regulation tied at 5 after Josh Gomez scored four goals and Jose Cortes added another. After two three-minute sudden death overtimes were scoreless, Justin Tirado scored the game winner during the second five-player shootout. Danny Maya also scored in the second shootout for the Panthers.
Goalie E.J. Marino made 32 saves and also scored a goal during the first shootout.
Gomez scored eight goals during an 11-9 win over Timber Creek last week and scored three in a 9-7 victory over Colonial.
“It’s been a crazy couple of weeks,” Gateway Coach Vonnie Kochensparger said.
Osceola’s girls improved to 9-3 Tuesday after a 12-3 win over Timber Creek as Cassandra Welch scored five goals.
The Osceola boys were 8-4 after a 17-11 win over Timber Creek as Carl Tait scored five times.
The Kowboys are 6-1 in the district before Thursday’s match against Boone.
Coach Trish Abell said her team is looking forward to its annual match against Gateway Tuesday. Osceola’s girls and Gateway’s boys won last season.
“The rivalry game with Gateway is always a fun one. Our team is ready for a good game,” she said. “There should be a lot of fans there.”
