The countdown is on for one of the most respected film festivals in the Southeast — The Film Festival.
The 19th annual film festival returns to the Enzian Theater in Maitland and downtown Orlando April 9-18.
This year’s festival includes not only an amazing variety of films, but the Film, Food and Wine Celebration — events dedicated to food and wine with a Southern edge.

Film highlights for this year include the annual feature films competition, a slate of 20 films, many making their East Coast premiere and some only being shown for a second time in the United States.
The lineup includes 11 filmmakers making their feature directorial debuts and eight female directors represented among the 10 narrative films and 10 documentaries.

“The scope of cinematic expression in this year’s Festival is found not simply in terms of the volume of submissions or its demographics but in the variety of types of filmmakers and the issues they explore,” said Matthew Curtis, Florida Film Festival programming director. “This year we are screening films that embody risk-taking, diversity, and aesthetic innovation, and we are hopeful that audiences will find them as engaging and entertaining as we did.”

The 20 films will be eligible for up to three awards each; the Grand Jury award for best film in that category, a Special Jury award given at the jury’s discretion for exceptional achievements, and the Audience award determined by audience votes.

The narrative full-length features include:
Bomber — Florida premiere. Directed by Paul Cotter.
Cummings Farm — East Coast premiere. Directed by Andrew Drazek.
Don’t Let Me Drown — Southeast premiere. Directed by Cruz Angeles.
Drones — East Coast premiere. Directed by Adam Benson and Adam Busch.
Homewrecker — East Coast premiere. Directed by Brad Barnes and Todd Barnes.
Lovely, Still — East Coast premiere. Directed by Nik Fackler.
My Suicide — Southeast premiere. Directed by David Lee Miller.
Obselidia  — East Coast premiere. Directed by Diane Bell.
Punching the Clown — Regional premiere. Directed by Gregori Viens.
Winter’s Bone — East Coast premiere. Directed by Debra Granik.

The festival kicks off  with the Southeast premiere of Paper Man, directed by Kieran and Michele Mulroney and starring Jeff Daniels, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Lisa Kudrow, and Kieran Culkin.
Paper Man star Emma Stone, co-star Kieran Culkin, and co-directors Kieran and Michele Mulroney will be among the celebrity attendees at the 2010 Opening Night Film and Party, taking place April 9 at 6:30 p.m. Emma Stone, who starred in Zombieland and appeared in Judd Apatow’s Superbad, was on  the March cover of Vanity Fair and  dubbed one of the “new faces of Hollywood.” Kieran Culkin, who starred in Lymelife received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Igby Goes Down. Paper Man marks the directorial debut for married filmmakers Kieran and Michele Mulroney, who are currently slated to write the screenplay for the untitled Sherlock Holmes sequel.
Tickets to attend the opening night film and party  start at $30 for film only passes, $80 for party only Passes, and $100 for film and party passes. Visit FloridaFilmFestival.com to order.

“We’re thrilled to kick off this year’s event with the fresh and talented filmmakers and the cast of this truly indie dramatic-comedy,” said Florida Film Festival President, Henry Maldonado. “This will be an unforgettable evening, as we’ll also host masters in the culinary world with visiting celebrity food icons the Lee Bros. and more.”

A coming-of-middle-age story that’s drawn comparisons to Lost in Translation and Away We Go, Paper Man tells the story of an unlikely and quirky friendship between a struggling writer and a Long Island teenager whose companionship shows him that no matter how much it hurts, it’s never too late to grow up.
This year's festival will be held at the Enzian and the Regal Winter Park Village 20. In addition, the festival also will have screenings at downtown Orlando's Plaza Cinema Cafe.
“We will give the downtown experience a full taste of our Festival. From major films, to parties, to a free movie picnic by the lake,” said Maldonado.
