The Osceola Lady Kowboys were runners-up to Timber Creek by one point, 79-78, at the Kowboys Invitational track meet Saturday that brought 20 schools to OHS.
Several Osceola County athletes won individual championships.
Osceola’s Ileis Figueroa (2:30.27) was the 800 meters champion, while St. Cloud’s Diana Martinez won the discus and placed second in the shot put (34-1).
Harmony’s 4 x 800 relay (10:12.52) of Chelsea Connor, Brittany Connor, Sam Travis and Kylie Koral also won.
For the boys, Harmony’s Chris Bollinger (154-7) won the discus championship and placed third (42-0) in the shot put.
Osceola’s Defario Phillips (11.02) raced to the 100 meters title. He was third (22.50) at 200 meters.
St. Cloud’s Bailey Morgan (10:13.21) won the 3,200 meters.
Lake Region (63) won the boys team title. St. Cloud (51) was third, Osceola (47) tied for fifth and Harmony (44) finished eighth.
Osceola girls coach Eric Pinellas said the meet was a good test for his team, which has placed seventh or better at the Class 4A state track meet the past three seasons.
“This was the first real good competition our young girls have seen, so in that sense it was a valuable teaching tool for us,” Pinellas said. “We did finish second overall, but having said that, we have some work to do if we’re going to sustain the program at the level that it’s supposed to be.”
OHS state champion sprinter Tynia Gaither was second (12.13) in the 100 and 200 (25.25) to Lake Wales’ Octavius Freeman, one of the nation’s top high school sprinters.
“Tynia is on a little different schedule; we’re working to have her peak at the right time of the season and she’s pretty much on schedule,” Pinellas said.
Pinellas was encouraged by Jamisha Gant’s third-place (15.66) effort in the 100 hurdles.
“I thought of her more as a 300 hurdler than as a short hurdler. It was the second time she’s run that event, and she comes in with a 15.66,” Pinellas said.
Jada Murray earned third place in the shot put (31-1.5), another pleasant surprise, Pinellas said. “I thought Jada had a good meet,” he said.
Osceola’s 4 x 100 relay (50.25), the defending state champion, was third.
Harmony’s Carey Dewey (4-10) won third place in the high jump over Osceola’s Jennifer McDaniel (4-10).
St. Cloud’s Sean Wood (2:04.61) was second in the 800, and the Bulldogs’ 4 x 800 (8:25.38) was second with Wood, Morgan, Carlos Perez and Matt Cole.
Osceola’s Marc Deas (41.39) was third in the low hurdles, and Frank Thomas (38-6.5) took third in the triple jump.
Harmony’s Matt Henning (10:29.43) was third at 3,200 meters.
St. Cloud boys coach Kevin Harkema said his team turned in a solid performance at OHS.
“We did a nice job. The distance crew has been training hard, and it showed,” he said.
Harmony’s Brad Foulke (126-8.5) was second in the discus, combining with Bolinger to give the Longhorns to top two positions in the event,
Harmony discus coach Steve Landram said his athletes are in good position to do well at the state meet.
“His (Bolinger’s) best throw in a meet last year was 147-3. He currently leads the (Class) 3A throwers, but we have a long way to go. We are excited about his potential. Brad has thrown 138-6 at St. Cloud,” Landram said.
Osceola travels to the University of South Florida Saturday for the 45-team George Steinbrenner Invitational.
“There will be a lot going on there, it will open some eyes for our young kids,” Pinellas said.
St. Cloud ran at Poinciana Wednesday and will host a meet Monday at 4 p.m.
Gateway will host a meet today at 4 p.m.
