By Rick Pedone
Sports Editor
Osceola and Gateway are the only two teams in the county participating in water polo.
The Osceola boys and girls qualified for the district tournament last season. Osceola
Boys coaches Trish Abell and Jaime Abell have prepared their squad for a challenging 20-match schedule.
“We have a great group of boys this year, 16 strong, of which 15 swam for our swimming team last fall,” Trish Abell said. “We have been working hard in the off season and we believe this will pay off for us.”
Four-year veterans Zack Yawn and Carl Tait lead a team that includes senior goalie Demitrius San Roman. Daniel Wade, Kevin Jones, Cameron Wehr and Caleb Ferguson are starters.
Freshman Casey Raines and senior Tyler Anderson join the lineup, along with two-time wrestling state champion Joe Locksmith.
Newcomers include Nick Vlachos, Michael Pierson, Alex Adames, Axel Valentin, Pete Baldwin, Nick Vlachos and goalie Erick Figueroa.
Rennie Adams’ girls team also boasts a strong returning cast that includes captains Kristen Miller and Cassandra Welch.
Goalie Brooke Hammock is back, along with Alison Thomas, Amy Wilson and Amber Hammock.
Newcomers include seniors Kelly O’Brien and Patricia Ortega, sophomores Jenna Adams, Danielle Davis, Manuela Guetierrez and Samantha Manguiat. Freshmen are Ashlyn Firman, Caitlyn Phelps and Logan Spurlock.
Tiffany Welch is the assistant coach.
Both teams started the season 4-3.
Gateway
The Gateway girls are off to a 4-1 start for Coach Vonnie Kochensparger as Jodi Hennen, Johanna Weiss, Melissa Morgan, Jane Lowe, Amber Paoloemilio, Sam Arbonida and Jane Lowe have provided the scoring punch.
Sam Hoin averaged 12 saves during the team’s victories.
“The girls team is versatile and a lot of the players can play several positions. It has been fun to watch them play as a team,” Kochensparger said.
The boys, who won two of their first five matches, have been led by Kyle Keaten and Jose Cortes. Danny Maya and Justin Tirado have also put the ball into the net.
Goalie E.J. Marino, an all-district selection, averaged nine saves in the team’s victories.
“We are moving the boys around to new positions to find the best fit for the team,” Kochensparger said. “Several of the new players are stepping up to take over as starters.”
