Poinciana By Lisa D’Cato

One of the most important things you can do only takes a few minutes of your time, is safe, can be done in the privacy of your home and costs you nothing. Be counted in Census 2010.
Every household will receive a census form to fill out. Census information helps determine how much federal funding comes into communities. This will help Poinciana for things like schools, health programs, senior services and social services. It also helps businesses like restaurants, shop owners and even big box stores when they are considering coming into the area. Before businesses make such a big investment, they need to make sure there are enough people in the community to sustain it. Think of it like: “If you fill it out, business will come.” That may mean more jobs, more shopping opportunities as well as more services for Poinciana.
Your census answers are protected by law. Your information cannot be shared with the IRS, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, ICE and CIA, police, military or welfare agencies.
If for some reason you do not fill and mail back your census form, you may receive a visit from a census worker. They will need to produce I.D. and will have a confidentiality notice. They will not ask for any banking or credit card information. As with all strangers, talk to people on the doorstep.
This is an opportunity to show the correct demographics of Poinciana. Take the time to fill out and return the 2010 census form. For more information, visit www.2010 census.gov.

The country’s first and largest classroom refresher course for drivers 50 and older will be cruisin’ into the Poinciana Community Center. It’s the AARP Driver Safety Course.
The course helps drivers to sharpen their skills, as well as learn how to deal with the natural changes that may occur with age.
Insurance companies will recognize the successful completion of this course by offering a driver discount. The AARP Driver Safety Course will be at the Poinciana Community Center Monday and Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. The fee for AARP members is $12, non-AARP members, $14. For more information, call Ralph, 407-246-9145. The Poinciana Community Center is at 395 Marigold Ave.

The Osceola County School Board has expanded the choice options for Poinciana children in kindergarten through fifth grade for the 2010-11 school year. Instead of attending their home-zoned school, Chestnut Elementary has been renamed Chestnut Elementary School for Science and Engineering. Students will have the opportunity to learn, with a special focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Learning will be enhanced through hands-on activities with robots, science experiments, rocketry, video production, computer design, Lego construction and more.
Poinciana Elementary School has now become Poinciana Elementary Academy of Fine Arts. The school features an arts curriculum, featuring visual, dance, drama, choral and instrumental. Students who attend this school will be prepared to apply for acceptance into The Osceola County School for the Arts.
Students in grades K-4 in the following schools may apply to attend: Pleasant Hill, Reedy Creek, Sunrise, Bellalago Academy, Deerwood, Chestnut Poinciana and KOA. Transportation will be provided via hubs at middle and/or high schools. Student admission will be based on a random lottery system.
Poinciana parents and students interested in any of these choice schools are encouraged to attend these informational sessions: Tuesday, at Bellalago Academy; Tuesday, March 23, Horizon Middle School; Tuesday, March 30, Poinciana Elementary or Chestnut Elementary schools. All programs are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
For more information, contact the district’s charter and choice office, 407-870-4847.
