Recently, Florida Healthy Kids Executive Director Rich Robleto announced six Orlando-area students as winners in the statewide Florida KidCare Act-Out for Health contest.
The contest challenged middle and high school students to create television public service announcements (PSA) or billboard ads promoting Florida KidCare, the state- and federally-supported health insurance program for children under the age of 19.
During an awards ceremony at Florida Hospital, Robleto honored the 12 regional winners for both categories and then revealed the statewide billboard winner and statewide television PSA winner.
High school seniors Luke and David Consolo from Osceola County School for the Arts took the top statewide award for their television, which is scheduled to air on Comcast Cable in the spring. The Consolo brothers also were the statewide TV PSA winners last year.
Last fall, the contest was promoted in public and private schools across Florida and a lesson plan was provided to help technology, broadcast and art instructors incorporate the contest into their curriculum. Students created and submitted their billboard designs through the interactive ActOutForHealth.net Web site and many of the television PSA entries were created as a class project.
“The Act-Out for Health contest allowed Luke and David to combine their love of visual arts and TV production to produce a commercial that raises awareness of the Florida KidCare program in our school,” Principal Jeanette Rivers, who attended the awards ceremony, said. “This contest is another great way to teach our students about important issues such as health care, which they can share with their friends and family.”
