It’s been an uncomfortable start to the spring sports season, thanks to an unusually cold and damp winter.
“This weather is driving me crazy because we have averaged a rainout a week,” Harmony softball coach Ralph King said last week as he considered when to make up a March 2 rainout against St. Cloud. The game will be played March 22 at 7 p.m.
“The way that our schedules are set up, it is hard to get these games made up,” he said. “We may lose a game with South Lake because there are no (mutual) open dates on the schedule, so I am looking to schedule some other games just to fill the openings.”
Osceola High Coach George Coffey sympathizes.
“We lost three games to rain, and eight practices,” he said. “It  makes it hard to develop any consistency.”
Coffey attributes one of his team’s two losses, Feb. 26 at Haines City, to the weather.
“It was cold, it was hard for us to get focused. It showed in the way we played,” he said.
Other sports are bothered by the intemperate weather.
The track, water polo and tennis teams also have been hampered.
A tennis match between the Harmony and Celebration girls last week had to be canceled because of gusting wind.
Water polo teams have shivered through the first two weeks of the season.
“Six very cold matches,” Gateway Coach Vonnie Kochensparger said.
How cold has it been? Central Florida had nine freezes this winter. Experts say this is the coldest winter, in about three decades.
“It’s hard to remember anything like it,” Coffey said.
Temperatures warmed early in the week, but most teams were idle because of FCAT testing.
Harmony will host Eustis today  at 7 p.m. in a key 4A District 6 softball showdown.
Chance of rain: 70 percent.
The good news? It probably won’t snow.
