Use public transit
To the editor:
The new INRIX National Traffic Scorecard has bad news for Florida. Eight Florida regions appear on the Worst 100 list of traffic-clogged areas in the United States. Only California suffers more widespread traffic congestion. Further bad news is that traffic is growing again nationally, having previously softened with the recession.
Traffic congestion is bad for business, bad for the environment, increases America’s addiction on foreign oil and hurts our quality of life.
Public transportation provides Floridians with an alternative to traffic congestion. If Floridians and visitors didn't take 262 million trips on transit last year, our traffic would be much worse.
Florida’s 28 public transportation systems provide Floridians with savings averaging $9,000 per year if transit is used to replace a second car. Transit riders experience a green, healthy and relaxing ride to work while Florida drivers face the stress of traffic congestion.
Public transportation creates jobs, spurs economic activity, enhances real estate values and makes Florida more competitive in attracting new business, retirees, and tourists.
