The Poinciana Invitational track meet today is expected to attract about a dozen teams from schools around Central Florida.
The meet begins at 9 a.m.
One of the premier competitors is Lake Wales’ Octavious Freeman, one of the top female sprinters in Florida.
Among the schools expected to participate, after the host Eagles, are Celebration, Gateway, New Dimensions, Liberty, Cypress Creek, George Jenkins, Haines City, Lake Gibson, Lake Region, Umatilla and Winter Haven.
Several other schools may also compete, said Poinciana Coach Rusty Gould.
“It should be a great meet. We’ve got about 500 athletes coming,” Gould said.
The meet will serve as a good early season test for the county schools, especially with several Polk County schools participating, Gould said.
“We’re in a new district, and we’re excited about competing against the speed in Polk County,” Gould said.
Poinciana girls coach Bryan McLoughlin is encouraged by his team’s depth.
“We have a lot of talent in the sprints and jumps,” he said.
The meet will begin at 9 a.m.
