Lisa D’Cato The Poinciana Area Council, known as PAC, has a motto: “Poinciana: Where Business and Community Come Together.”
The council operates under the umbrella of the Kissimmee/Osceola County Chamber of Commerce. The group had several interesting speakers at its monthly meeting Feb. 10 at Mosaics Restaurant in Solivita. The speakers all had important information about the community.
Two representatives from Osceola County provided a transportation update. Gregg Hostetler, public works assistant administrator, and Dave Tomek, planning and zoning manager, outlined primary goals. Priority road projects that may impact Poinciana include Poinciana Parkway and Hoagland Boulevard.
Hoagland Boulevard is a priority, as it assists Poinciana and ties the airport to the north, capitalizing on the Kissimmee Gateway. Poinciana Parkway is considered an essential roadway as nearly 70,000 residents have only one access/exit point.
Now the funding and timeline: A grant was obtained from the Florida Department of Transportation for Hoagland Boulevard’s preliminary and final design. Funding is in partnership with the city of Kissimmee and No. 1 on the Metroplan Stimulus Projects Category 2 list. Poinciana Parkway also is a top priority, with design and permitting. Both these projects are included in the 2030 Long Range Transportation Plans.
SunRail phase 2 is planned for 2014. Stops include a Poinciana Industrial Park station. SunRail is commuter rail, moving people between home and work. It is hoped that this would support economic development around station locations. Over time, it may reduce peak hour roadway usage.
These transportation issues are being noted and addressed. Continue with patience and appreciate the small things, like the potholes being fixed on Cypress Parkway. Patience.

Professor Thomas Bryer helped with the feasibility /incorporation study. At the Feb. 10 PAC meeting, it was announced that Bryer’s students in the graduate program of the University of Central Florida need to complete a project that would lead to their completion of the program and prove beneficial to the residents of Poinciana.
Those of us who lived in Poinciana during the 2004 hurricanes all have a story. Since we faced the brunt of these three storms, most stories involve lack of information and confusion over available services. The goal of this proposed project for graduate students at UCF involves a cross-section community emergency preparedness and response plan.
Though changes have been made in both counties, the findings of this report would be customized to fit the needs of the community. There is no charge attached to this project, so it is truly a win-win.
More information will follow as the project begins in May.
