The 124th Silver Spurs Rodeo gets under way Friday at 7:30 p.m. as hundreds of cowboys and cowgirls will compete in the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi River.
Action continues Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and again Sunday at 2 p.m.
The rodeo was founded 76 years ago by the Silver Spurs Riding Club.
Competition is scheduled in bareback bronc, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, team roping, tie down roping, bullriding, barrel racing and, for the kids, mutton bustin’.
The Silver Spurs Rodeo is the second stop on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Southeastern Circuit. Cowboys compete not only for a cash prize at the rodeo, but also for points toward Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho, April 7-10.
Among the Southeastern Circuit’s all-around leaders are frequent Spurs competitors Spunk Sasser, of San Antonio, Fla., Brad Hartt, of Sebring, and Juan Alcazar, of Groveland.
One of the premier attractions at the rodeo is the popular quadrille, where Silver Spurs members perform a “square dance” on horseback.
A “Special Rodeo” for disabled children is scheduled for Saturday morning.
Tickets are $15 and include admission to the Osceola County Fair. Children 10 and under are free. Friday’s performance is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night,” with proceeds benefiting the Osceola Cancer Center.
Osceola County students are admitted to Friday’s rodeo, and the fair, at no charge.
