Heritage Christian School will take a well-earned reputation as a giant killer into the Florida Christian Conference playoff quarterfinal round next week.
The Eagles, 17-5 and the No. 2 seed in the FCC Eastern Division, will host the winner of the Western Division’s Nos. 3-6 playoff game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Heritage Christian, which had a bye in the first round of the playoffs, has been off since its 52-50 win over Celebration Feb. 5. It was the Eagles’ second victory over a public school this season after dispatching Poinciana in overtime last month.
“That definitely helps our guys. They are confident,” Coach Jim Estrella said.
Maynard Rowe, the team’s leading scorer, had 26 and Josh Newman added 13 for Heritage Christian, the FCC runner-up last year.
The Eagles led most of the way and expanded their lead over Celebration to 10 in the fourth quarter before the Storm fought back.
“We stopped rebounding. They were getting a lot of put-back baskets,” Estrella said. “It was a good win for our kids, though.”
Heritage may be an underdog as the FCC playoffs develop. Brandon Faith Christian, which defeated the Eagles in the championship game last season, is one of the most talented teams Estrella has seen this season, in or out of the conference.
The FCC playoffs continue Thursday with the semifinal round. The championship game at Clearwater Christian College begins 2:30 p.m. Feb. 20.
