Harmony (70) successfully defended its Orange Belt Conference girls weightlifting championship last week over St. Cloud (48), Osceola (39), Liberty (30), Poinciana (16), Gateway (11) and Celebration (6).
Five Osceola County lifters will compete Saturday at the state tournament at New Port Richey River Ridge High.
The Lady Longhorns boasted three champions in Sanya Clarke (101-pound weight class; 100-100-200), Melissa Albert (139, 125-140-265) and Lauren Harris (154, 115-155-270).
The Lady Longhorns won with their depth. Five Harmony lifters placed second and two finished third.
Osceola also had three champions with Tynia Gaither (119, 125-125-250), Zanquina Ellison (129, 175-150-325) and Jada Murray (unlimited, 150-125-275).
St. Cloud had two winners: Annie Barberi (110, 105-110-215) and Shaliena Davis (169. 145-155-300).
Poinciana’s Kandra Anderson (183, 150-145-295) and Liberty’s Saundrina Smith (199, 115-115-230) also won championships.
State qualifiers include Osceola’s Ellison, the de-fending 119-pound state champion, and Gaither. St. Cloud’s Davis, Poinciana’s Anderson and Harmony’s Kristen Beumel (110) also will compete.
Ellison was injured at the conference meet Feb. 3 when she feel backward attempting to clean and jerk 165 pounds. She injured her right hand, although X-rays revealed no fracture.
OHS Coach Eric Pinellas said she will lift at the state meet, but she didn’t practice due to the injury.
“She’s 30 pounds ahead of second place, so what we’re counting on is that she can win it on brute strength, get that one good lift in each division and win it that way,” he said.
Gaither, seeded eighth at 119 pounds, is only 5 pounds out of fourth place.
“The top three are too far ahead, but she could be fourth without much trouble,” Pinellas said.
