Poinciana By: Lisa D’Cato Sometimes only negative things are noted and positive things are ignored. There are good things happening at our local high schools, big things that are making an impact on the quality of the students’ education.
The first branch of a credit union was recently welcomed into an Osceola County school. The ribbon cutting for CRE Federal Credit Union was held at Poinciana High School Jan. 13.
The credit union at Poinciana High School is the first step in educating students in financial issues they will face every day as adults. This also is a real life experience in the financial industry for students and provides a complete training program for them.
The student-run facility provides checking, savings and share certificates for students and staff. This is a tremendous opportunity for students considering a career in finance.
U.S. News & World Report has ranked, for three consecutive years, America’s Best High Schools. For the first time, a Poinciana area high school was named: New Dimensions High School was given a bronze rating.
U.S. News & World Report examined 21,786 high schools in the country. A school’s rating was based on academics and enrollment data. Also receiving recognition in Osceola County was the Professional and Technical High School, with a bronze rating, and Osceola County School for the Arts, with a silver rating.
“I am extremely proud of the Osceola County schools for their tireless work to ensure our students are successful,” Superintendent Michael Grego said. “I believe that Osceola County public schools as a whole will become a model district, nationally recognized for excellence not only in student achievement but in all aspects of district operations. We will continue to have a laser-sharp focus on success for each student as we work toward continued improvements in our high schools and all of our schools.”
We should all be encouraged by the great happenings at our local high schools.
