Osceola County weight-lifters will attempt to qualify for the state meet at today’s sectional competition at Timber Creek High.
All seven county schools will be represented.
Last week, Harmony (54) edged St. Cloud (40) and Gateway (8) in a three-way girls weightlifting meet at St. Cloud High.
Harmony’s winners were Sanya Clarke (95-100-195) at 101 pounds; Kristin Beumel (110-105-215) at 110; Lauren Miranda (115-130-245) at 139; Hannah Brown (105-130-235) at 154; Melissa Stuckie (120-115-225) at 183 and Lauren Swogger (100-95-195) at 199.
St. Cloud’s winners were Olivia Falkner (110-100-210) at 119; Nora DelGiudice (120-120-240); Shaliena Davis (145-145-290) at 169 and Alexis Sabillion (140-110-250) at heavyweight.
“Our girls are improving, and Shaliena has a real good chance to qualify for us. We may get a couple of others in there as well,” St. Cloud Coach Lonnie Beckel said. “We don’t have a lot of kids with a lot of experience at this level. We’ll have to see what happens.”
Harmony Coach Jarred Butler said his team is improving.
“That was the first time we’ve beaten St. Cloud in a dual or a tri-meet situation, so our girls were pretty excited,” he said. We’ve got 10 through to the sectional meet. I’m proud of how our girls lifted. We have at least five who are within distance of getting to the state meet.”
Butler said Clarke, Beumel, Miranda, Swogger, Stuckie, Brown, Taylor Schroeder (119), Lexie Allen (129), Mallory Wesley (129), Melissa Albert (139), Tori Keelean (154), Lauren Harris (154), Addison Hickey (169) and Myrriah Johnson (heavyweight) all have made significant contributions to the team.
Osceola’s brings two of the county’s top lifters to the sectional meet in Tynia Gaither (119) and defending state champion Zanquina Ellison (129).
Also competing for the Kowgirls are Karen Handlan (101) and Jada Murray (unlimited).
Osceola Coach Eric Pinellas said Ellison, who won at 119 pounds last year, should surpass her totals of 175 pounds in the bench press and 330 pounds total lift, good for state marks.
“She’s at 185 bench and 155 clean and jerk, but she wants to get to 200 pounds in the bench press,” Pinellas said.
Gaither, who won two state track championships last year, also should qualify for the state meet.
Butler sees Liberty’s Louissa Nevy (139), Mercedes Cash (154) and Saundrina Smith (183) as potential state qualifiers.
He said the Orange Belt Conference meet Wednesday at St. Cloud, which starts at 6 p.m., should be competitive.
“Osceola County as a whole is stronger than ever,” he said. “St. Cloud, from top to bottom is very strong.”
Gateway’s Danielle Sweating (169) and Elloni Ellick (183), Poinciana’s Kiera Johnson (169) and Celebration’s Paige Rembert all are in the mix for conference championships, Butler said.
