HARNEY - Halsey Edward Harney, 86, formerly of Oneonta, NY and Kissimmee, FL, and a recent resident of the Presbyterian Home in New Hartford, NY, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, New Hartford, NY.
He was born May 21, 1923 in Oneida, NY, a son of Charles Henry Harney and Carrie Emogene Gaut. He was a 1942 graduate of Madison High School and attended Eaton University in Baltimore, MD. Mr. Harney also served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he obtained the position of Staff Sergeant.  In addition, he worked for Victory Markets from 1947 until his retirement in 1976 where he was the managed several of the company’s stores including the Oneonta, NY store for nearly two decades.
Mr. Harney was involved in several community organizations and associations including serving as a life member of the AMVETS of America Post 1776, Kissimmee, FL; the DAV Memorial Post 60, Binghamton, NY; the VFW Post 3227, St. Cloud Florida and the Battle of the Bulge, Arlington, VA. He was also a proud member of the Oneonta Kiwanis club where he obtained perfect attendance awards as well as becoming a member of the Legion of Honor in Kiwanis International.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Roseanne Harney of Glendale, AZ, a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Terry Collins of Ithaca, NY, and a daughter, Pam Harney of Irving, TX.  He was fortunate enough to be a grandfather to eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the oldest in a family of eleven children and is survived by four brothers and their spouses – John (Jack) and Monica Harney of Sacramento, CA; LeRoy and Georgia Harney of Oriskany Falls,  NY;  Robert and Gloria Harney of Rome, NY and Fay Harney of Knoxboro, NY. He is also survived by two sisters – Esther and her husband Sam Kitchen of Vernon, NY and Charlene Bagbee and her partner Don Bateman of Clark Mills, NY. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws and truly appreciated them all with special affection for Liz Harney, Paul Harney, Marta Lormand, Brenda Tornatore and Heidi Kitchen for giving of their time and love during his final years. He was predeceased by brothers Eugene Harney (1991) and Jim Harney (2010) and by sisters Alida Harney Odit (1999, spouse is Amos Odit) and Bessie Harney Babcock (2008, spouse is Jim Babcock).
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad Street, Hamilton, NY.  Viewing hours will be from 2-4 p.m. prior to the service.  A spring burial with military honors will be in the Stockbridge Cemetery, Munnsville, NY at a date to be determined.
