Treviranus pounds pavement to raise funds for Dream Village
Special to the News-Gazette
Gerhard Treviranus, of Campbell City and a member of the St. Cloud Pavement Pounders running club, recently ran from Cocoa Beach to Clearwater Beach, only stopping to eat and change clothes. The run took just over 52 hours, through the rain, wind and cold. Treviranus accepted pledges and donations for the benefit of the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village in Davenport.
The run started in Cocoa Beach on Friday, Dec. 4 at 10 p.m. and finished in Clearwater Beach — 163 miles away — at 2:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7.
“What we accomplished this weekend I think shows everyone, even a handyman who is just an average runner, can, with the right support, accomplish great things,” Treviranus said.
Many of the runner’s friends and other members of the club accompanied and/or checked in on him throughout the feat, giving him moral support, making him laugh and helping him to finish.
“The moral of this story is: If you have friends by your side, anything is possible,” Treviranus said.
Treviranus raised $775 with his first run for the Sunshine Foundation.  Ten people from the St. Cloud Pavement Pounders took turns to accompany him on various parts of his journey, starting with Jim Spaulding, who biked from Cocoa Beach to St. Cloud in the pouring rain all night long.
On Friday, from St. Cloud into Kissimmee, Mike Snyder, Misti Pittenger, Jeff Greene and Gary Batty took turns at various stages accompanying the runner. Meeting up with Treviranus around midnight Saturday was Kimberly Lytle and Tom Wertz, who kept him company through Davenport and Haines City.
In the early hours of Sunday, Snyder came back, along with Jennifer Thornton, who ran with Treviranus from Winter Haven to Lakeland, where Naomi Embleton ran with him through Plant City to the outskirts of Tampa. From there, Greene, Lytle and Wertz, who also came back for their second turns, ran in stages with Treviranus until the end.
Joanne Kjolsen drove his support vehicle the entire time, bringing Treviranus food, drinks, a change of clothing, knee braces and medications.
Batty, also a member of the St. Cloud Pavement Pounders, will run a marathon in the Florida Keys in May to benefit the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village.
The Dream Village is celebrating 20 years and 20,000 dreams answered of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children. The Dream Village houses children whose wish is to visit Central Florida theme parks.
