The Osceola High wrestlers picked up four individual championships and placed fourth overall (166) at the Flagler Rotary Invitational last weekend.
Liberty High wrestlers also had a good weekend by winning five of six matches at the Hagerty Duals.
Osceola’s Gabe Bird won at 145 pounds to continue an unbeaten (41-0) season. He has 23 falls.
Also collecting championships for Osceola were Levi Clemons (42-1) at 171 pounds, Pete Baldwin (40-1) at 140 pounds and Joe Locksmith (29-2) at 135 pounds. Clemons and Baldwin share the team lead in falls with 33.
Baldwin, the 2008 state champion, beat No. 1-ranked Matt Nereium, of Winter Springs, 4-0, and was named the Outstanding Wrestler.
Locksmith stopped No. 1-ranked Cody Ross, of Springstead, 7-1, after two previous losses to Ross.
E.J. Jiminez (119, 29-4) placed fourth and Alex Rivera (130, 22-11) was sixth for OHS.
Springstead (233.5) won the team championship.
Osceola’s Wade Ridings (130, 16-2) defeated two state qualifiers in compiling a 4-2 tournament record.
Osceola competes at the Bishop Moore Invitational Saturday.
The Kowboys will hold their first Alumni Night Jan. 29 against St. Cloud beginning at 5:15 p.m. The junior varsity matches begin at 6 p.m. It will be the final match for OHS in the current gym. The new gym will be completed in time for the 2010-11 wrestling season. Alumni wrestlers from Osceola and St. Cloud are welcome. Liberty’s Felix Betancourt remained unbeaten at 130 pounds and was named the team’s outstanding wrestler after winning all but one of his matches by pin. Joshua Garcia (145), Aric Fernandez (171) and Angel Perez (215) were unbeaten at Hagerty.
Guelmi Salgado (135), Corey Grey (125) and J.J. Elisis (160) lost once.
The Chargers compete at state champion Brandon’s Tony Ippolito tournament this weekend.
St. Cloud (72) placed 10th at Flagler.
St. Cloud’s Frank Cousins, the defending Class 2A state champion, remained unbeaten (35-0) after winning the 160-pound title. Cousins pinned more opponents faster than any wrestler at the tournament.
Heavyweight Josh Chattin reached the finals.
“Frank’s having a great season. We’ll have to decide whether he goes at 160 or 171 when the district tournament comes,” Coach Matt Milton said. “Josh has really come a long way and is definitely on the right track to make some noise at state. Our younger guys scored well to help us place in the top 10.”
Celebration freshman David Akers (103) reached the quarterfinals at Flagler. J.J. Francis (145) and Cameron Ward (189) had multiple wins for the Storm.
Seventh-grader Fox Baldwin (112), of Kissimmee, won one match for Lake Highland Prep at the Florida Christian Patriot Invitational, helping the team finish second. His career record is 105-11.
