New Dimensions isn’t the only giant killer in Osceola County.
Tuesday, before a cheering crowd at its gym, Heritage Christian upended Poinciana, 67-65, in overtime, marking the school’s first-ever victory over a public school.
“It was incredible,” Heritage Coach Jim Estrella said. “With about a minute left, I said that we’re going to shock the world, and we did. It would be like UCF beating Duke.”
Maynard Rowe (game-high 32 points) launched a game-tying three-point shot from half court with one second left in regulation, knotting the game at 56.
In overtime, with the team’s leading rebounder Josh Newman (14 pts., 13 reb.) on the bench with five fouls, Heritage seniors Ivan Cossio and John Pham stepped up to hit crucial shots. Pham hit a three-pointer from the corner, and Cossio nailed three free throws. Guard Emilio Giler hit a pair of free throws and Rowe added two free throws to complete the upset victory.
Heritage, 14-3, played in the Florida Christian Conference championship game last season and qualified for the national Christian school tournament in Tennessee.
“Our fans stormed the court after it was over; they were going crazy,” Estrella said. “We left the score on the scoreboard.”
Sherwood Vincent hit six three-point shots and scored 24 for Poinciana.
Heritage Christian hosts Life Academy today at 7:30 p.m.
Poinciana, 5-11, returns to 4A District 7 competition today at 7:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge.
