The city of St. Cloud and Osceola County Council on Aging have been working with local community service organizations to develop projects that will be completed Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Neighborhood Revitalization Project is set for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hopkins Park and Tracey Manor in St. Cloud.

“There is no better way to honor the memory of Dr. King than through volunteering and neighborhood improvements,” said Beverly Hougland, the council’s chief executive officer and a member of the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, known as Volunteer Florida.

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King holiday as a national day of volunteer service. President Bill Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act, sponsored by Sen. Harris Wofford and Rep. John Lewis, to make the King Holiday a day of service that brings people together. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate King’s legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action.

Communities are encouraged to be a part of local projects. Locally, volunteers can learn more about volunteering, AmeriCorps, and community partners.

Volunteers will be trimming trees, mowing lawns, planting shrubs, pressure-cleaning homes, removing trash and debris, reading to children, and even building a gazebo. Representatives from the organizing agencies will be on hand to coordinate the volunteer activities. The project is coordinated by the council’s Volunteer Center and the St. Cloud Parks and Recreation Department.
