Several roads were closed in St. Cloud Friday afternoon when longtime St. Cloud High tennis coach Dallas G. Kelsey struck a St. Cloud Police Department patrol car with his vehicle then fled the scene while the officer was responding to another emergency, Sgt. Denise Roberts said in a report.

Members of the St. Cloud Police Department about 2:30 p.m. responded to a traffic crash at the intersection of 5th Street and Old Canoe Creek Road.

As a result, the roads were closed on 13th Street (U.S. Highway 192) at Old Canoe Creek Road and all directions of travel on 5th Street and Old Canoe Creek Road. The entrance and exit to Wal-Mart also was blocked.

Kelsey was later located and detained at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, located at 800 Brown Chapel Road in St. Cloud, according to the report. After further investigation, Kelsey was arrested and charged with fleeing the scene of a traffic crash. No injuries were reported.

The St. Cloud High School tennis complex recently was named in Kelsey's honor after the coach stepped down early this year for health-related reasons. He said at the dedication ceremony in January that he plans to resume coaching the high school team next season.

Kelsey is the former St. Cloud city tennis pro for seven years and has given lessons to hundreds of local tennis enthusiasts since arriving in Osceola County two decades ago.
