The Florida Christian Conference Suns will make their second consecutive appearance at the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II mens national basketball tournament at Springfield, Mo. The Suns, 24-8, ranked No. 3 in the NCCAA D-II national poll, will play Central Bible, located in Springfield, Tuesday in the opening round.
The Suns, an at-large entrant and the No. 5 tournament seed, play Trinity Baptist Thursday if they win their first round game.
Last year, as a No. 4 seed, the Suns were eliminated from the tournament in their first game.
The 24 wins this season is a college record, Coach Jake Deer said.
Junior point guard Montique Lynch, who was instrumental in taking the Suns to last year’s national tournament, had an excellent junior season, as did junior forward A.J. Williams and senior center Alex Wierda.
Williams and Alex Sanchez, a recent national player of the week ago after averaging 26 points over three games, are South Region first-team selections. Lynch was a South Region second-team selection.
Deer was named the South Region Coach of the Year.
Juwan Bray joined Lynch on the South Region all-tournament team last week, where the Suns were runners-up.
“We have a great shot to go deep,” Deer said.
