Celebration’s boys and Harmony’s girls are the defending Orange Belt Conference champions, and both teams have the talent to successfully defend.
They also have the potential to place among the top two teams in 3A District 8, which would advance them to the regional tournament. Celebration
Celebration has dominated the Orange Belt Conference boys standings for the past two seasons and is favored to win again with a veteran lineup under Coach Bob Tripp.
Five players return including senior No. 1 Richard Cruz, No. 2 junior Jacob Glodde, No. 3 sophomore Dante Cruz, No. 4 senior Luis Penagos and No. 5 sophomore Alejandro Hernandez.
The Cruzes will team at No. 1 doubles and Glodde and Penagos will play No. 2 doubles.
Tripp said Melbourne is the team to beat in District 3A-8.
“Like last year, it may come down to a tie for second place with Eau Gallie,” Tripp said. “Cruz and Cruz will make a strong showing in doubles and should come in first, second, or third in the district. Richard Cruz should make a strong showing in the OBC as the No. 1 singles player.”
Newcomers this season are seniors Jay Summerville and Cody Rubin, junior Ben Callaghan, sophomore Aahil Ali and freshman Kevin DeVos.
Coach Catherine Thames takes over the girls program, which has two lettermen in sophomores Sydney Lowell and Maija Sunnarbord.
Also playing are sophomores Emily Carter, Reema Salen, Maria Santana, Hanna Wagner, Jane Wheeler and Amy Young. Freshmen Chevy Harrington and Samina Mehmood also are on the roster.
